These crispy air fryer chicken fries are made with strips of chicken breast coated in Parmesan panko breadcrumbs, then air-fried until golden. They’re basically homemade chicken tenders shaped like fries—which means more crispy edges and significantly more dipping.

Crispy Parmesan chicken fries served with dipping sauce

I love these for an easy dinner, snack, or game-day appetizer. The ingredient list is simple, they cook quickly, and you only need a little olive oil to get that crunchy coating.

Serve them with ranch, honey mustard, barbecue sauce, or marinara. Honestly, use whatever sauce is already in your refrigerator.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Really crispy: Panko breadcrumbs create a lighter, crunchier coating than regular breadcrumbs.
  • Quick: Once the chicken is breaded, it cooks in about 8–10 minutes.
  • Made from chicken breast: These are homemade chicken fries, not the frozen kind.
  • Family-friendly: They’re easy to hold, easy to dip, and basically designed for anyone who considers sauce a food group.
  • Easy to change: Add heat, switch the seasoning, or use gluten-free breadcrumbs.

What Are Chicken Fries?

Chicken fries are thin strips of breaded chicken shaped like French fries. They’re similar to chicken tenders, but their smaller size gives you more crispy coating in every bite.

Fast-food and frozen versions are usually formed from ground chicken. These are made from sliced chicken breasts, so the center stays juicy while the Parmesan-panko coating gets golden and crunchy.

Air Fryer Chicken Fries Ingredients

Chicken breasts ingredients to make chicken fries.

You’ll only need a few simple ingredients to make this recipe. The exact measurements are listed in the recipe card below. Here’s an overview of what you’ll need:

  • Chicken breasts: Use boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Cutting them into evenly sized strips helps them finish cooking at the same time.
  • Flour: This creates a dry surface so the egg and breadcrumbs can stick properly.
  • Eggs: The eggs bind the breading to the chicken.
  • Panko breadcrumbs: Panko is lighter and crunchier than traditional breadcrumbs. I pulse it briefly in a food processor so it coats the thin chicken strips more evenly.
  • Parmesan: Use finely grated Parmesan so it mixes evenly with the panko. It adds saltiness and helps the coating brown.
  • Garlic powder: Adds flavor throughout the breading without the risk of fresh garlic burning.
  • Salt and pepper: Season the chicken and the breadcrumb mixture so every layer has flavor.
  • Olive oil: A light coating helps the chicken fries become golden in the air fryer. Olive-oil spray works especially well because it covers the crumbs evenly.

See recipe card for quantities.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Fries

Chicken breasts cut into thin fry-shaped strips

Add the panko, Parmesan, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper to a food processor. Pulse a few times until the panko is finer, but do not blend it into powder.

Transfer the breadcrumb mixture to a shallow bowl.

Slice each chicken breast horizontally into thinner cutlets. Cut the chicken into fry-shaped strips, keeping them as similar in size as possible.

Season the chicken lightly with salt and pepper.

Place the flour in one shallow bowl. Crack the eggs into a second bowl and whisk until smooth. Add the Parmesan-panko mixture to a third bowl.

I arrange them in this order: chicken, flour, eggs, breadcrumbs, clean plate. It keeps the process moving and contains at least some of the mess.

Chicken strips being coated in Parmesan panko breadcrumbs

Coat one chicken strip in flour and shake off the excess. Dip it into the egg, allowing any extra to drip back into the bowl. Press it into the breadcrumb mixture until completely coated.

Transfer it to a clean plate and repeat with the remaining chicken.

Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.

Arrange the chicken fries in a single layer, leaving a little room between them. Lightly spray or brush the tops with olive oil.

Air-fry for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Spray the second side lightly after flipping. Very thin pieces may be ready sooner, so begin checking them around 5–6 minutes.

The chicken fries are ready when the coating is golden and the center reaches 165°F.

Top Tip

Do not crowd the air-fryer basket. The hot air needs room to circulate around each piece or the breading will steam instead of getting crispy.

Cook in batches if necessary. Keep the first batch warm in a 200°F oven while the rest cooks.

Substitutions

  • Chicken breasts: Chicken tenderloins work too. Slice thick tenderloins lengthwise so they resemble fries.
  • Panko: Regular breadcrumbs will work, although the coating will not be quite as crunchy.
  • Parmesan: Pecorino Romano is a good substitute, but it is saltier. Use a little less salt in the breading.
  • Flour: Use a cup-for-cup gluten-free flour blend and gluten-free panko to make gluten-free chicken fries.
  • Olive oil: Avocado-oil spray works well because it can handle the air fryer’s high heat.

Air Fryer Chicken Fries Variations

Spicy Chicken Fries

Add ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper or 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning to the breadcrumb mixture. Serve them with ranch or blue cheese dressing.

Buffalo Chicken Fries

Cook the chicken fries as directed, then toss them lightly with buffalo sauce immediately before serving. Do not add too much or you’ll lose the crispy coating.

Italian Chicken Fries

Add 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning to the panko. Serve with warm marinara for dipping.

Extra-Garlicky Parmesan Chicken Fries

Increase the garlic powder to 1½ teaspoons and add an extra 2 tablespoons of Parmesan. Obviously, more Parmesan is rarely the wrong decision.

Oven-Baked Chicken Fries

Arrange the breaded chicken on a wire rack set over a baking sheet. Spray with oil and bake at 425°F for approximately 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and cooked to 165°F.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Chicken Fries

These chicken fries can be dinner with a salad or vegetables, but they also work really well as part of an appetizer spread.

Serve them with my Greek yogurt French onion dip when you want something creamy, or add air fryer zucchini chips for even more crunch.

For something fresh on the side, make this Green Goddess salad. If you’re feeding people for game day, add air fryer jalapeño poppers or air fryer Buffalo cauliflower.

My favorite dipping sauces include:

  • Ranch
  • Honey mustard
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Marinara
  • Buffalo sauce
  • Garlic aioli

Make Ahead

You can cut the chicken and prepare the breadcrumb mixture up to one day ahead. Store them separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator.

For the best texture, wait to bread the chicken until shortly before cooking. If you need to bread it ahead, arrange the pieces in a single layer, cover them, and refrigerate for no more than four hours.

This is also the kind of recipe worth saving once you find your favorite seasoning combination. I keep recipes I make repeatedly in my Cilantro Parsley Recipe Card Box Set so I don’t have to search through my phone with flour-covered hands.

How to Store Homemade Chicken Fries

Refrigerator

Let the chicken fries cool completely, then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Place a paper towel in the container to absorb extra moisture.

Freezer

Freeze the cooked chicken fries in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once solid, transfer them to a freezer-safe container or bag and freeze for up to two months.

Reheating

Reheat refrigerated chicken fries in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes. Frozen cooked chicken fries will take approximately 6–8 minutes.

I do not recommend reheating them in the microwave unless you have made peace with losing the crunch.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Chicken Fries

How long do chicken fries cook in the air fryer?

Fresh, homemade chicken fries generally take 8–10 minutes at 375°F. The exact time depends on their thickness and your air fryer, so begin checking thin pieces after 5–6 minutes. Chicken is safely cooked when it reaches 165°F internally.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer?

Preheating helps the coating begin crisping as soon as the chicken goes into the basket. If your air fryer does not require preheating, follow the manufacturer’s directions and check the chicken’s temperature before serving.

Why aren’t my chicken fries crispy?

The basket may be overcrowded, the breadcrumbs may need more oil, or the chicken strips may have been too wet before breading. Shake off excess flour and egg, lightly coat the breadcrumbs with oil, and leave room between the pieces.

Can I make frozen chicken fries in the air fryer?

Yes, but frozen packaged chicken fries require different instructions from this homemade recipe. Follow the package directions because cooking times vary depending on whether the product is raw or precooked.

Can I stack chicken fries in the air fryer?

No. Arrange them in one layer so the hot air can reach the entire surface. Stacking will give you pale, soft spots instead of an evenly crisp coating.

Can I make these without a food processor?

Absolutely. Place the panko in a zip-top bag and lightly crush it with a rolling pin or the bottom of a measuring cup. You want smaller crumbs, not breadcrumb dust.

Equipment

An air fryer is the main piece of equipment that affects this recipe. A basket-style model gives the chicken fries plenty of airflow, but an oven-style air fryer also works. You may need to rotate the trays halfway through cooking. I use Gourmia Air Fryer.

An instant-read thermometer is also useful. The strips are small and cook quickly, so checking for 165°F is more reliable than cutting open several pieces and guessing.

Description

These homemade air fryer chicken fries are made with strips of chicken breast coated in crispy Parmesan panko and cooked until golden.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1–2 tablespoons olive oil or olive-oil spray
  • Dipping sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
  2. Add the panko, Parmesan, garlic powder, and a pinch each of salt and pepper to a food processor. Pulse briefly until the breadcrumbs are finer and evenly combined. Transfer to a shallow bowl.
  3. Slice each chicken breast horizontally into thinner cutlets. Cut the chicken into evenly sized, fry-shaped strips and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  4. Place the flour in a shallow bowl. Whisk the eggs in a second bowl. Place the breadcrumb mixture in a third bowl.
  5. Coat each chicken strip in flour and shake off the excess. Dip it into the eggs, then press it into the breadcrumb mixture until completely coated. Transfer to a clean plate and repeat.
  6. Arrange the chicken fries in a single layer in the air-fryer basket. Lightly spray or brush them with olive oil.
  7. Air-fry for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway through and lightly spraying the second side with oil. Begin checking especially thin strips after 5–6 minutes.
  8. Remove the chicken fries when they are golden and have reached an internal temperature of 165°F. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Cook the chicken in batches rather than overcrowding the basket.
  • Air-fryer temperatures and cooking speeds vary. Use the internal temperature as the final test.
  • Finely grated Parmesan adheres better than large shreds.
  • For extra flavor, add ½ teaspoon onion powder and ½ teaspoon paprika to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Nutrition information should be calculated using the exact chicken weight, amount of breading used, oil absorbed, and chosen dipping sauce.
