This Tequila Soda contains tequila, lime, Tajin, and my homemade serrano simple syrup.

This Spicy Serrano Tequila Soda contains tequila, lime, Tajin, and my homemade serrano simple syrup.

We have been in the Florida Keys for the past two weeks and I am so enjoying this weather - I do not envy everyone back north. All the beach makes we want to do is sit outside and drink either a Mojito or a Caipirinha. I had some Tajin here at the house (which I use to put on all my fruit like the true Mexican that I am) and was in the mood for a margarita. I did not want all the sugar margarita mixers have, and I wanted to use the club soda I had in the fridge. This is where Spicy Serrano Tequila Soda came to the mix.

What is a Tequila Soda with Jalapeño?

A Tequila Soda with Jalapeño is a refreshing cocktail that combines tequila, soda water, lime juice, and jalapeño pepper. The homemade jalapeño simple syrup adds a spicy and sweet kick to the cocktail, while the soda water gives it a light and fizzy texture.

Why you will love this recipe

Versatile: I personally love Tequila Soda because it is not loaded with sugars and doesnt give you a hangover. You can adjust however you want though.

Great for warm weather: I love drinking this on the beach in the sun.

Spicy Tequila Soda Ingredients

You'll only need a few simple ingredients to make this. The exact measurements are listed in the recipe card below. Here's an overview of what you'll need:

  • Tequila
  • Serrano Simple Syrup
  • Limes
  • Club soda
  • Tajin seasoning
  • Ice
  • Sugar
  • Jalapeño

See recipe card for quantities.

How to make Serrano Simple Syrup

Make the serrano Simple Syrup. Combine ½ cup water and ½ cup sugar into a small pot and add a whole serrano pepper. On low heat simmer until the sugar completely dissolves and immediately remove from heat. Let cool and transfer to a lidded jar. Refrigerate until ready to use, syrup lasts 1 week. Leave the serrano in there to keep that spicy taste!

This syrup is completely optional for a Tequila Soda. You really only need tequila, soda, lime and ice, but I love adding the Serrano Simple Syrup for that extra kick!

In an ice-filled cocktail shaker, combine the tequila, serrano simple syrup, lime juice, and shake until chilled. Rim a glass with a lime wedge then dip in the tajin. Add fresh ice to the glass, pour the drink over, and garnish with lime wedges.

Substitutions

Tequila: You can use tequila like Roca Patrón Reposado, Casamigos Blanco, Santo Mezquila, Fortaleza Blanco Tequila, Casa Noble Marqués de Casa Noble, or Código 1530 Rosa Tequila.

Jalapeño: You can use serrano pepper instead.

Sugar: This can be cane sugar, brown sugar or granulated sugar.

Tequila Soda Recipe Variations

Cooking is a chance to be creative! Have fun with it and feel free to make your own variation.

  • Feel free to add a liqueur like St. Germain, triple sec, or pamplemousse liqueur
  • Add other fresh citruses like grapefruit or oranges.
  • You could try muddling fruits like blackberries, blueberries or even strawberries.
  • Add fresh herbs like mint or rosemary.

Equipment

To make a Tequila Soda with Homemade Jalapeño Simple Syrup, you will need some basic bar equipment along with a few additional items to make the jalapeño simple syrup. Here's a list of equipment and tools you will need:

  1. Cocktail shaker - to mix and shake the cocktail
  2. Jigger or measuring cup - to accurately measure the ingredients
  3. Highball glass - to serve the cocktail
  4. Ice - to chill the cocktail
  5. Bar spoon - to stir the cocktail
  6. Jalapeño pepper - to make the simple syrup
  7. Small saucepan - to cook the simple syrup
  8. Fine mesh strainer - to strain the simple syrup

Spicy Tequila Soda Recipe Top Tips

If you're looking to make a spicy Tequila Soda, here are some tips to help you achieve that:

  1. Use fresh jalapeños: Fresh jalapeño peppers will give you the best flavor and spice for your cocktail. Choose peppers that are firm, smooth, and without any wrinkles or blemishes. Be sure to wash and dry them thoroughly before using.
  2. Infuse the simple syrup with jalapeño: You can make your own jalapeño-infused simple syrup by simmering jalapeño slices in sugar and water. This will give your cocktail a consistent level of spice and flavor throughout.
  3. Adjust the amount of jalapeño: The amount of jalapeño you use will directly impact the spiciness of your cocktail. Use more slices for a spicier cocktail, or use fewer slices for a milder one. You can also remove the seeds and membranes to reduce the heat.
  4. Rim the glass with salt and chili powder: For an extra spicy kick, rim your glass with a mixture of salt and chili powder. This will complement the spiciness of the cocktail and add some extra flavor.
  5. Add a splash of hot sauce: If you want an even spicier cocktail, you can add a splash of your favorite hot sauce to the mix. This will give your cocktail an extra kick and some additional flavor.
  6. Use a high-quality tequila: A high-quality tequila will have a smooth and complex flavor that can complement the spice of the jalapeños.

Make the simple syrup ahead of time so it has time to cool down.
