This Tequila Soda contains tequila, lime, Tajin, and my homemade serrano simple syrup.
We have been in the Florida Keys for the past two weeks and I am so enjoying this weather - I do not envy everyone back north. All the beach makes we want to do is sit outside and drink either a Mojito or a Caipirinha. I had some Tajin here at the house (which I use to put on all my fruit like the true Mexican that I am) and was in the mood for a margarita. I did not want all the sugar margarita mixers have, and I wanted to use the club soda I had in the fridge. This is where Spicy Serrano Tequila Soda came to the mix.

How to make Serrano Simple Syrup
Make the serrano Simple Syrup. Combine ½ cup water and ½ cup sugar into a small pot and add a whole serrano pepper. On low heat simmer until the sugar completely dissolves and immediately remove from heat. Let cool and transfer to a lidded jar. Refrigerate until ready to use, syrup lasts 1 week. Leave the serrano in there to keep that spicy taste!
This syrup is completely optional for a Tequila Soda. You really only need tequila, soda, lime and ice, but I love adding the Serrano Simple Syrup for that extra kick!

Spicy Tequila Soda Recipe Top Tips
If you're looking to make a spicy Tequila Soda, here are some tips to help you achieve that:
- Use fresh jalapeños: Fresh jalapeño peppers will give you the best flavor and spice for your cocktail. Choose peppers that are firm, smooth, and without any wrinkles or blemishes. Be sure to wash and dry them thoroughly before using.
- Infuse the simple syrup with jalapeño: You can make your own jalapeño-infused simple syrup by simmering jalapeño slices in sugar and water. This will give your cocktail a consistent level of spice and flavor throughout.
- Adjust the amount of jalapeño: The amount of jalapeño you use will directly impact the spiciness of your cocktail. Use more slices for a spicier cocktail, or use fewer slices for a milder one. You can also remove the seeds and membranes to reduce the heat.
- Rim the glass with salt and chili powder: For an extra spicy kick, rim your glass with a mixture of salt and chili powder. This will complement the spiciness of the cocktail and add some extra flavor.
- Add a splash of hot sauce: If you want an even spicier cocktail, you can add a splash of your favorite hot sauce to the mix. This will give your cocktail an extra kick and some additional flavor.
- Use a high-quality tequila: A high-quality tequila will have a smooth and complex flavor that can complement the spice of the jalapeños.
Make the simple syrup ahead of time so it has time to cool down.
