A Michelada with Clamato is the most refreshing drink. This Michelada with Clamato is made with a Mexican beer, clamato juice, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce.

This Michelada with Clamato is made with a Mexican beer, clamato juice, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce.

Micheladas are super similar to a Bloody Mary drink, but this is a very traditional drink in Mexico. This drink is best enjoyed under the sun on a hot day and it is a great cure for a hangover.

Although Micheladas are traditionally Mexican, they are enjoyed in various countries all around the world. I spent a week in Chile during the winter in 2019 where we pretty much had a Michelada everyday - They are thoroughly enjoyed in Valparaiso! This was one of my favorite trips ever. I went with four of my best college friends and my childhood friend.

We spent the first half of the trip in the mountains of Patagonia hiking Torres del Paine and the rest of the trip in Valparaiso. Valparaiso was awesome because we met up with my friend from high school and stayed with his friends at their place by the beach. You can't go wrong with this drink and a Snapper Ceviche with Popcorn and the beach. I love that Micheladas can be spicy. If you can’t find clamato you can definitely use tomato juice, as you would with a Bloody Mary.

What is a Michelada?

A michelada is a Mexican drink made with beer, lime juice, assortment of sauces, spices, and chili peppers. It start by adding lime juice into beers, also known as a chelada. Eventually, it turned into a more spicy beer. A chela is a popular word for a beer in Mexico.

Where did the Michelada come from?

Some say it came from a man named Michael Esper who would order his beer at his Sports club with lime and chili powder. Members of the club caught on and started ordering Michael's Chela. This is where they say the name came from, and the name Michelada was born.

Why you will love this Perfect Mexican Michelada Recipe

Versatile: Feel free to modify the lime juice, Worcestershire, clamato to your liking.

Full of flavor: The tajin, lime juice and clamato give this drink so much flavor.

Great for warm weather: I love drinking this in the summer months.

You'll only need a few simple ingredients to make this. The exact measurements are listed in the recipe card below. Here's an overview of what you'll need:

  • Light Mexican beer like Corona or Sol
  • Clamato juice
  • Lime juice
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Hot sauce (optional)
  • Ice
  • Tajin
  • Lime wedges for serving

See recipe card for quantities.

How to make a Michelada

  1. Place Tajin on a plate. Rim two glasses with a lime and then dip the glasses into the tajin.
  2. Fill both glasses with ice and set aside.
  3. In a separate glass, add the Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, lime juice and clamato juice and mix well.  Pour the beer into each prepared glass. Top each glass with the mixture until it reaches the rim.
  4. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Hint: Modify to your liking.

Substitutions

Beer: You can use any light beer, preferably Mexican, like Corona, Sol or XX.

Clamato: You can find clamato in the drink section. This is basically clam juice and itis red in color.

Limes: Traditionally this uses limes, but feel free to use lemons instead.

Worcestershire: In Spanish, this is called Salsa Inglesa. It is essentially the same thing. You could substitute with soy sauce or Maggi sauce instead.

Variations

Cooking is a chance to be creative! Have fun with it and feel free to make your own variation.

  • Spicy - add tajin or chamoy on the rim.
  • Kid friendly - Omit the beer and let your kids try it.

Equipment

I love using pretty glasses to make pour this into. I used a shaker as well to add the Worcestershire, hot sauce and lime juice.

Storage

This will be good in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

These ingredients don't stand up well to freezing.
