Ingredients
You'll only need a few simple ingredients to make this. The exact measurements are listed in the recipe card below. Here's an overview of what you'll need:
- Olive oil
- Onion
- Water
- Ground beef
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Worcestershire sauce
- American cheese
- Boston lettuce
- Tomato
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
In a large deep skillet over medium heat, add oil and wait for it to shimmer. Add the onions and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, until they start to caramelize. Reduce the heat to medium, add the water, and continue to caramelize for another 30 minutes, or until deeply browned but not burnt. Season with salt and set aside.
In a large bowl, season the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder. Divide the mixture into 8 separate pieces and form them into very thin patties.
Heat a grill to 450°F, or hot enough that you can only hold your hand above the grill grates for a second. Cook on the grill for about 3 to 4 minutes on the first side. Flip and cook for an additional 2 minutes, or your desired doneness.
Place two patties on top of a lettuce leaf, top with onions, tomato slices, and wrap with another lettuce leaf. Repeat with three more burgers.
Substitutions
Onion: I love using vidalia onions, especially when I am caramelizing them. You can use yellow or white onion for this.
Ground beef: Use good quality ground beef for this recipe for best flavor.
Worcestershire: Although hard to pronounce, Worcestershire sauce gives the burger so much flavor.
Lettuce: I used butter or boston lettuce for this since they are big and are used to hold the burger together.
Variations
Cooking is a chance to be creative! Have fun with it and feel free to make your own variation.
- Spicy - add chili pepper flakes while cooking to imbue heat into the dish, or banana peppers as toppings.
- Deluxe - add guacamole or crispy onions.
- Kid friendly - add crushed potato chips (ketchup chips!)

Equipment
Equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. Stone bakeware takes longer to heat up than metal pans, and also retain heat for longer, which could make the recipe more watery, or burnt on the outsides.

Storage
This will be good in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
These ingredients don't stand up well to freezing, but you can freeze the patties for up to three months.
Top tip
Make sure the patties are thin patties, so they don't fall apart on the lettuce.
