Greek Yogurt French Onion Dip

This greek yogurt french onion dip has all the deep, caramelized onion flavor of the classic version, minus the sour cream and mayo. Real caramelized onions, Greek yogurt, a splash of Worcestershire, and a few pantry seasonings — that's it. No packets, no shortcuts that taste like shortcuts.

I make this constantly for game days, potlucks, or just because I have chips in the pantry and onions on the counter. It takes a little patience (caramelizing onions isn't a five-minute job), but the actual hands-on time is minimal, and it's the kind of dip that disappears fast.

If you want to double it for a crowd, it scales easily — just use a bigger skillet so the onions have room to actually caramelize instead of steam.

Why you will love this French Onion Dip recipe

High protein. Swapping sour cream for Greek yogurt means you're getting a solid protein boost without losing any of the creamy, tangy texture people want from a dip.

Real caramelized onions. No onion soup mix here. The onions take about 30 minutes to cook down, and that's where all the flavor actually comes from.

Make-ahead friendly. This dip is better after it sits in the fridge for a bit, so it's an easy one to prep the day before you need it.

Simple ingredient list. You probably already have most of this in your kitchen right now.

What Is Caramelizing, Really?

Caramelizing onions just means cooking them low and slow until the natural sugars break down and turn golden brown. It's different from sautéing, which is quicker and higher heat. The sugar and salt in this recipe help pull moisture out of the onions and speed up browning, but there's no way around the time it takes — rushing it with high heat just burns the outside while the inside stays raw and sharp. Low, patient heat is the whole trick.

Greek Yogurt French Onion Dip Ingredients

You'll only need a handful of ingredients to make this recipe. Exact measurements are in the recipe card below. Here's what you need and why:

Onions: Yellow onions are my go-to here because they caramelize well and have a good balance of sweetness. Two large onions sound like a lot, but they cook down significantly.

Butter + olive oil: Using both gives you the flavor of butter with the higher smoke point of olive oil, so the onions brown instead of burning.

Salt and sugar: A small amount of each helps draw out moisture and speeds up caramelization. You won't taste "sugar" in the final dip — it just helps the onions do their thing.

Worcestershire sauce: This is what gives the dip that savory, almost umami backbone that French onion flavor is known for. Don't skip it.

Greek yogurt: Use plain, full-fat or 2% Greek yogurt for the best texture. Nonfat works in a pinch, but it can taste a little thin.

Garlic powder and onion powder: These reinforce the onion flavor without adding more raw onion texture to the dip.

Chives: Totally optional, but they add a nice fresh contrast and make the dip look finished.

See recipe card for quantities.

How to Make Greek Yogurt French Onion Dip

In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 1: Start the onions. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften.

Add salt and sugar to the onions and continue to cook for another 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and let cool.

Step 2: Caramelize. Add the salt and sugar and keep cooking, stirring frequently, for another 20-25 minutes. You're looking for deep golden brown, jammy onions — not just softened ones. Lower the heat if they start browning too fast in spots.

In a medium bowl, combine the Greek Yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and ground black pepper. Mix well.

Step 3: Cool the onions. Remove the skillet from heat and let the onions cool to room temperature. Adding warm onions straight to yogurt will thin it out and make the dip weepy.

Step 4: Mix the base. In a medium bowl, stir together the Greek yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper until smooth.

Once the caramelized onions have cooled, mix them into the Greek Yogurt mixture. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dip for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 5: Combine and chill. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the yogurt mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour so the flavors have time to come together.

Step 6: Serve. Give it a good stir before serving, top with fresh chives if you're using them, and serve with chips.

Top tip: Let the onions actually cool before mixing them in. This is the one step people skip, and it's the difference between a thick, scoopable dip and a soupy one. If you're short on time, spread the onions on a plate or baking sheet to cool faster.

Substitutions

Greek yogurt: Full-fat plain yogurt works if you can't find Greek yogurt, though the dip will be a bit thinner. You can strain it through a cheesecloth-lined strainer for 30 minutes to thicken it up.

Butter: If you want to keep it dairy-light in the caramelizing step, you can use all olive oil instead. You'll lose a little richness, but it still works.

Worcestershire sauce: Coconut aminos or soy sauce can stand in if you're out, though you'll lose some of that distinct Worcestershire tang.

Looking for a healthy French onion dip? This easy recipe combines caramelized onions, Greek yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, and olive oil.

How do I thicken up my dip?

Add More Greek Yogurt: Mix in a bit more Greek yogurt to increase the thickness. This will also help maintain the creamy texture.

Incorporate Cream Cheese: Blend in a small amount of softened cream cheese to thicken the dip and add richness.

Use a Thickener: Stir in a small amount of cornstarch or arrowroot powder mixed with water. Heat the dip gently to activate the thickener.

Greek Yogurt French Onion Dip Variations

Extra garlicky: Add a clove of fresh minced garlic along with the garlic powder for a sharper bite.

Spicier: A few dashes of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne wakes the whole thing up.

Herby: Add a tablespoon of fresh parsley or thyme along with the chives.

Cheesy: Fold in a couple tablespoons of finely grated Parmesan for extra depth.

Bacon version: Stir in some crumbled cooked bacon right before serving. Not exactly "healthy" anymore, but really good.

Best Skillet for Caramelizing Onions

A good heavy-bottomed skillet makes a big difference when caramelizing onions because it distributes the heat more evenly and helps prevent random spots from scorching. I usually reach for a cast iron skillet or stainless steel clad pan for this. You want something with enough surface area that the onions can actually cook down and caramelize instead of steaming on top of each other.

What to Serve with Greek Yogurt French Onion Dip

Ruffles are the classic here, but this dip is good with almost anything sturdy enough to scoop. Try it with kettle chips, pretzel crisps, sliced baguette, or a mix of raw veggies like carrots, celery, and bell peppers if you want something lighter. It also works as a spread on a baked potato or a burger.

Make Ahead

This dip is actually better made a day ahead. The onions can be caramelized up to 3 days in advance and stored in the fridge separately, or you can mix the entire dip and refrigerate it up to 2 days before serving. Just give it a stir before it goes out on the table, since it can separate slightly as it sits.

How to Store Greek Yogurt French Onion Dip

Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. The flavor actually improves after the first day.

Freezer: I don't recommend freezing this one — Greek yogurt tends to separate and turn grainy once thawed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Healthy French Onion Dip

Can I make this ahead of time? Yes. In fact, it's better made a day ahead so the flavors have time to meld. See the Make Ahead section above.

Is this recipe healthy? Compared to a traditional sour cream-based onion dip, yes — you're getting more protein and less saturated fat, while keeping the same flavor.

Can I use low-fat Greek yogurt? You can, though full-fat or 2% will give you a creamier, more satisfying texture. Nonfat can taste a bit thin and tangy on its own.

Why did my onions turn out bitter or burnt instead of caramelized? This usually means the heat was too high. Caramelizing takes patience — keep it at medium or even medium-low and stir frequently so the sugars break down evenly instead of scorching.

Can I double this recipe? Yes, just use a bigger skillet for the onions so they have enough surface area to caramelize properly instead of steaming.
