  • 1 red or green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 (4 oz) can tomato paste

Instructions

  2. Stir the tomato paste and brother into the ground beef mixture. When the paste is blended in, add the brown sugar, Worcestershire, and mustard and stir to combine. Simmer for 20 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.
  3. Garnish with parsley leaves and serve on buns.

Notes

  • Brown the Meat Properly: When cooking the ground beef or alternative, make sure to brown it well. This will develop rich flavors and add a nice depth to the Sloppy Joes. Break up any clumps and cook until the meat is no longer pink.
  • Drain Excess Fat: After browning the meat, drain any excess fat from the skillet. This helps reduce the greasiness of the dish and prevents it from becoming overly oily.
  • Sauté Vegetables: Sautéing the onions, bell peppers, and garlic before adding them to the meat adds extra flavor and helps soften the vegetables. Cook them until they are tender and slightly caramelized for enhanced taste.
  • Adjust Consistency: Sloppy Joes should have a thick, saucy consistency that coats the meat. If the mixture seems too dry, add a splash of beef broth, tomato sauce, or water to achieve the desired consistency. If it's too watery, cook it a bit longer to allow the liquid to reduce.
  • Let the Flavors Develop: Once the Sloppy Joes are assembled, allow them to simmer on low heat for a little while. This allows the flavors to meld together and intensify, resulting in a more flavorful dish. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Customize the Seasonings: Feel free to adjust the seasonings according to your taste preferences. Add more Worcestershire sauce for a tangier flavor, increase the brown sugar for sweetness, or add spices like chili powder, paprika, or cayenne pepper for extra heat and depth.
  • Toast the Buns: For an added touch of deliciousness, lightly toast the hamburger buns before assembling the Sloppy Joes. This helps prevent the buns from becoming soggy and adds a nice crunch to each bite.
  • Let it Rest: After cooking, allow the Sloppy Joes to rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to settle and the sauce to thicken slightly, resulting in a more cohesive and enjoyable eating experience.
