Description

Have you ever wondered how to How to grill a Tomahawk Steak? For my Tomahawk Steak Recipe, I prefer seasoning it with salt and nothing else.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds of a 2 inch thick Tomahawk steak
  • Salt

Instructions

  1. Remove the steak from the refrigerator about an hour before grilling to allow it to come to room temperature. This will help the steak cook evenly.

  2. Preheat your grill to high heat (around 500-550°F).

  3. Season the steak generously with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. You can also add other seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika if desired.

  4. Sear the steak on both sides. Place the steak on the hot grill and let it cook for about 3-4 minutes per side. Use tongs to flip the steak carefully.

  5. Move the steak to a cooler part of the grill to finish cooking. Reduce the heat to medium or medium-high and continue cooking the steak for about 6-10 minutes per side, depending on how well-done you prefer your steak.

  6. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the steak. The temperature should read 130°F for medium-rare, 135°F for medium, and 145°F for medium-well.

  7. Let the steak rest for at least 5-10 minutes before cutting into it. This allows the juices to redistribute and results in a more tender and flavorful steak.

  8. Serve the steak sliced against the grain with your favorite side dishes, such as roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or a salad.

Notes

  • Bring the steak to room temperature: Take the steak out of the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30-60 minutes before cooking. This helps the steak cook more evenly.
  • Season generously: Liberally season the steak with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper on both sides before cooking. You can also use other seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika, to add more flavor.
  • Use a meat thermometer: Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the steak to ensure it is cooked to your desired level of doneness. The USDA recommends cooking beef to a minimum internal temperature of 145°F for medium-rare.
  • Rest the steak: After cooking, let the steak rest for 5-10 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat. This will make the steak juicier and more flavorful.
  • Slice against the grain: When slicing the steak, make sure to cut against the grain to ensure the meat is tender and easy to chew.
  • Serve with a compound butter: Top the steak with a pat of compound butter made by mixing softened butter with minced garlic, chopped herbs, and a pinch of salt.
