Description

These Pickled Red Onions Recipe are made with red onion, water, vinegar, and bay leaves and made in under 5 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ red onion, sliced
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 2 bay leaves
  • salt

Instructions

  1. Add onion, water, vinegar, cumin, salt and bay leaves into a small pot and bring to a simmer for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
  2. Then remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Add into a bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Notes

  • Use thicker onions. You do not need to use a mandoline if you prefer thicker slices of onion. They will need to pickle for a longer time, at least twice the amount.
  • Make it spicy. Feel free to add a habanero or a jalapeno in the brine, or even a pinch of red pepper flakes works.
  • Make it Mexican. In the Yucatan peninsula, it’s traditional to pickle the onions using Seville oranges insead of vinegar.
