Description

These Caprese Crostini Recipe are made with Italian bread, mozzarella cheese, basil leaves, tomatoes and olive oil as desired.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Italian or French loaf, sliced
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 20-25 basil leaves
  • 2-3 red tomatoes, sliced
  • Olive oil, as needed
  • Salt and pepper, as desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat or oven to 450°F.
  2. Start by slicing the Italian bread. Pour olive oil into a small bowl and with a brush gently brush the olive oil onto each sliced piece of bread, on both sides. Grill on each side for 3 minutes on each side or bake in oven for 6-9 minutes.
  3. Place the toasted crostini on a big plate. Layer first with basil, then sliced tomato, and finally the mozzarella. Add more olive oil, salt and pepper as desired.

Notes

  • Use fresh and high-quality ingredients: Since Caprese Crostini relies on simple and fresh ingredients, it's important to use ripe and flavorful tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, and fragrant basil for the best results.
  • Toast the bread slices properly: Toast the bread slices until they are golden and crispy to provide a sturdy base for the toppings. You can use a toaster oven or oven to toast the bread slices, and brushing them with olive oil before toasting can add extra flavor.
  • Season the toppings: Season the tomato slices with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance their natural flavors. You can also drizzle some balsamic glaze or pesto for added depth and tanginess.
  • Arrange the toppings evenly: Assemble the tomato, mozzarella, and basil evenly on top of the toasted bread slices for a balanced flavor in each bite. You can stack them in layers or arrange them side by side, depending on your preference.
  • Serve at room temperature: Caprese Crostini is typically served at room temperature, as it allows the flavors of the ingredients to meld together. However, if you prefer a warm version, you can assemble the Crostini and briefly heat them in the oven before serving.
  • Customize with variations: Caprese Crostini is a versatile appetizer that can be customized to suit your taste preferences. You can experiment with different bread types, such as baguette, ciabatta, or sourdough, and add variations like balsamic glaze, pesto, prosciutto, or olives for unique flavor profiles.
  • Serve promptly: Caprese Crostini is best served fresh, as the bread can become soggy if left sitting for too long. Assemble and serve the Crostini promptly for the best taste and texture.
